Hi,

I just wanted to notice that the material I received show consistently middle C as C3. While normally (at least my other books and other resources on the internet) define middle C as C4.

I quote the English wikipedia on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_(musical_note)

"Middle C is designated C4 in scientific pitch notation because of the note's position as the fourth C key on a standard 88-key piano keyboard. While other note-octave systems (including those used by some manufacturers of digital music keyboards) may refer to "Middle C" with a different designation, the C4 designation is the most commonly recognized in auditory science and in musical studies it is frequently used in place of the Helmholtz designation c'."

So my question is: why is this course different in this respect?

Abraços,

Hello Peter:
I´m reading the chapter about violin : basic information and doing the midi mock ups of Mozart´s 36 symphony .
I got questions :

Must I do first a midi mock up with the solo strings?
is only the string section that I must do ?

Hello,
I'm a musician from Los Angeles and just signed up for the String Orchestration Course. I'm excited to learn about orchestration for strings, as I do music prep for an awesome arranger/orchestrator - and I really want to know the basics so I can orchestrate too. I use Logic 8 and Sibelius 6. I've got the Garritan Orch. for Logic but I'm not very happy with it yet.

I'm just completing my first-ever feature film score (indie film), and as the budget was extremely low (cough cough), I did no audio recording but did everything with Logic 8 and some softsynths. I need instruction on orchestration for future film and personal projects, and I'd thought I'd start with this course on strings.

Looking forward to the class, and to getting to know you all better. It's exciting that we're from different parts of the world.

Best regards,
Bettie

SONiVOX has decided to not lower their price in the face of other libraries lowering there's. It's a great library. The string section is smaller sounding than other libraries. But it's a great sound and the muted strings are well thought of.

You can get a good price for them at www.truespec.com. You can call 804-733-6122.

To Peter, or someone who owns Logic Pro 8:

I just finished the first PDF chapter for Street Smart Guide to Logic 8. In Chapter_01_Getting Started lesson while listening to various sounds in the Sound Library I found these potential discrepancies. I would greatly appreciate a conformation compared with your installed Library. Are these the same in your install?:

Library > 09 Orchestral > 10 Strings > Bass Section Legato sound is NOT legato; sounds just like Bass Section Tremolo.

Library > 09 Orchestral > 10 Strings has Bass Section, Cello Section, String Ensemble, Viola Section, Violin Sections. Where are the solo strings - Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass? Does the Logic Sound Library have these?

Library > 09 Orchestral > 02 Brass has solo French Horn and Tuba but NO Solo Trombone or solo Trumpet. Do these latter solo instruments exist in the Logic Sound Library?

Please confirm whether or not your install has the same discrepancies. It would help me to know if this is the way it is or if I need to reinstall.

Peter, I'm debating as to whether it is worth buying the Miroslav Philh series while on sale so I'm taking a good look at my sound inventory. I will be working with VSL SE. I would like to have all the solo instruments of the orchestra handy.

I'd appreciate your help. Thanks.

Hi there Mike,

I live in Sydney, and have just started the course too - just finished the first week and am finding it really interesting. I am a jazz guitarist but have always wanted to learn orchestration so it seemed a good place to start.

I am also using Cubase SX. Still have to get hold of a decent ochestra sample set, using Synful Orchestra now which seemed ok to start with.

Hope your CD comes together this year - I would love to hear what you end up doing on it strings-wise.

I have a story here that covers system integration issues that you need to read if you haven't already: http://soniccontrol.tv/category/producing/computers-and-recording/

On a quad core you have a lot of system integration issues to work through as first you have to list:

a) which programs are streaming off the hard drive and which are loading into RAM

b) which are compatible with Intel vs. th G5. If you're using the pre-PLAY versions of EW, you'll need Kontakt 3 installed to open those programs. I don't know about the virtual effects as I use an older Lexicon PCM I got el cheapo off eBay.

I would set it up by orchestration technique then library using Excel or the spreadsheet that comes with iWork.

For example:

Pizzicato Eastwest EXS24 VSL

What I've done for me personally is to just listen to key critical sounds and see what matches, then write my observations in a notebook. It's not very high tech, but with so many sounds, it's a huge task to manage.

You set up a track and label it in the Arrange Window. Then use Cmd3 to enter the Notation Window. All the tracks you setup now appear as staves. I'm sorry, but I can't answer the question about score sets because when I need to go that deep, I switch to Sibelius.

Hi there. I need some help. I need to know what would be the best/most cost-effective system in order to run full orchestra + other softsynths. I currently have just one Intel mac (quad-core). I plan to use:
Digital Performer (and possibly Logic Pro)
Gigastudio (but not for much longer since it's being discontinued)

Native Instruments:
Komplete 5 (incl.d Kontakt, Reaktor, absynth, Guitar Rig etc...)

Spectrasonics:
Stylus RMX (essential!)
Atmosphere

Propheads:
Reason
Recycle

Plugins:
Waves Gold Bundle (great, but there are also other great bundles...or the UAD card would be an excellent way to go. Look it up).
Altiverb

Steinberg:
Virtual Guitarist (though it's now discontinued). May switch to Music Lab's 'Real Guitar' soon.

East-West/Quantum Leap:
Symphonic Orch Gold XP
Choirs
Stormdrum

---Your kindest advice will be greatly appreciated!

Peter, How do I set up a multi-stave score in notation. Does each line get saved in Score sets? I want to be able to see the lines that I have scored at the same time. No problem with lead sheets just scores themselves. Where in the SSG can I learn more. Thanks, Deak

Hi,

I am just in the process of listening to and organizing a database or list of my sound library patches/programs so I can find the right instrument patch/program when I need it. (ie: what qualities a certain string patch/instrument has versus another).

Any thoughts or suggestions by anyone who's done this already would be very welcome. I use some VSL and other East West samples in kontakt 2 and EXS instruments, plus some hardware midi modules as well.)

Thanks!

Mike

Open NEW and just set up for one new Software Instrument track. When the arrange windows you have no tracks showing. Now CMD-3. This opens the notation window. You see no tracks.

Go back to the arrange window. To SEE music notation you must have data in the track. Per page 1 of Chapter 21, you can record your data in real time, or step time.

Once the data is recorded in the track using real time, CMD-3 or type N, and you see the music notation. You're automatically in Linear View.

Go to Chapter 3 page 13 (First Steps in MIDI recording) where this is explained.

Also read Chapter 9, Step Time and MIDI Mock-ups.

I am having trouble setting up the Score editor in Logic. For the life of me I cannot get the stave to open up at the top of my screen so that it looks like your pix on page 2 of Lesson 21, Creating a lead sheet. Also, do I need to open this as "create a new project" or open it using the "Compose" button. I'm confused!!
